All-UC Labor Workshop

Awarded to Marianne Page, Miguel Contreras Labor Program UCOP, $18,000

An inaugural labor workshop was held at UC Davis this past September. One time funding was provided by the Dean of Social Sciences (Steve Sheffrin) the Institute for Government Affairs (which generously provided us with staff assistance) and the All-UC Labor and Employment Research Fund. The workshop included approximately 30 faculty in labor economics from all nine general campuses, including some of the UC system’s most prominent labor economists, as well as many junior faculty and faculty from smaller campuses where there are fewer opportunities for mentoring and collaboration. Faculty came from UC economics departments, business schools, policy schools, and the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment.

There was a huge amount of enthusiasm for the workshop, and many of us throughout the UC system would like to find a way of turning it into an annual event analogous to the All-UC History conference that Alan Olmstead at UC-Davis organizes. The goals of the conference would be to 1) help establish intercampus co-operation and collaboration within the labor economics community at UC. 2) provide faculty with the opportunity to present, and obtain feedback on, research that is at a somewhat earlier stage than at the typical national conference, 3) provide mentoring and networking opportunities for junior faculty in the UC system, and 4) provide an opportunity for
advanced graduate students to present their work and begin to make connections outside of their home department, although limited funding prevented us from including graduate students this fall (except for those at UC Davis).
